Identity

Untitled 1

Identity is how we are perceived and how we look at ourselves and the perception of this. Today's society has many different identity’s due to the society growing and the implementation of faiths and thoughts. We identify people by cultural, gender, sexual, religious, racial and class indentity
Identity is made but not always truthful due to such factors as the media, intimidation of peers and to impress to achieve, “ modern media is encouraging the overthrow of traditions which kept people within limiting compartments”( Gauntlett 2011).

Identity's signifier and the signified of the message can always be changed due to the process and intention of the message, “Chinese whispers” takes place and the message is adapted to what the messenger perceives. This affects the outcome and affects first impressions which will and does affect identity of people. By presumptions being made constantly, identities are not truthful on the person but by the six categories mentioned earlier. Rather then constructing identity it is given to us from “ inherited recipes for living role stereotypes fail to function” ( Beck cited in Gauntlett, 2011) stereotypes of presumptions are made off the minority rather then the majority, an example of this is, a person wearing a hoody is there to cause trouble rather then them wearing it for comfort, this is enhanced by the media and the sterotypical mind of society.
Identity is expected, given and not constructed and implemented by society around. What right do people have to judge, the only right people have is to explore and make a fair decision.
